This blog will be in Thai and English about my journey of getting an offer from NYU Steinhardt or "New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development." The applied major is the Master of Arts in International Education (INTS). 🇚ðŸ‡ļðŸ—―âœĻ

If some of you do not know, English is not my first language, but I am trying my best to communicate with you guys to share my admissions experiences and journey to achieve my dreams.   • I studied and graduated from a Thai private school–a Thai curriculum school with Mathayom 6 Certificate. I was majoring in Language Arts in English and French. I did not attend a bilingual or an international school since I was young. I have tried so hard to keep going from A2 Pre-Intermediate English level to C1 Advanced after I graduated from MUIC. I know my English is not perfect, but this shows my perseverance and determination. I never give up on learning English, and thank you myself for keeping going! My IELTS Academic UKVI scores are overall 7.0, Listening 7.5, Reading 7.5, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 6.5. I also submitted the Duolingo English Test with an overall score of 130 (each component was not less than 120). I do not mean to say that I am perfect or that I am the best, but I feel like I have come so far. This is one of my greatest achievements and I can be proud of myself. 😆 (Don't want to sound arrogant or narcissistic, though. But I did say it so many times that I am not perfect. 😅)

If you graduated (undergraduate or postgraduate) outside the US and/or Canada, you MUST submit an evaluated transcript from either WES or ECE. NYU Steinhardt requires all students who graduated from a university, college or institute outside the US and/or Canada to do this. I used WES or World Education Services to evaluate my transcript from MUIC, Thailand. It costs around 208 USD for the ICAP course-by-course evaluation. To send the transcript to NYU Steinhardt, you should visit this page for further information. The delivery fees were 33 USD (an additional copy) + 12 USD (standard delivery) = 45 USD for an electronic copy to NYU Steinhardt. If you are an MUIC or Mahidol University graduate, you can ask the MUIC Registrar to submit the documents (transcript and certificate of graduation) to WES directly. It took me 3 weeks before I could get my evaluation. I submitted my document on 7 June 2024 and got my evaluated transcript on 28 June 2024. Please be reminded that it can take longer than this. From my experience with World Education Services (WES), it was not great either. My American friend said WES was not very helpful at all when she tried to call them on my behalf. I was supposed to receive my evaluation from WES on 26 June 2024, but it was sent to me on 29 June 2024. My WES status was frozen since 12 June 2024 and I had to wait patiently. Back at that moment, I was supposed to have the evaluation BEFORE 1 July 2024 since it is the deadline for the extended deadline application round. However, I decided to pay 430 USD more to ECE to get another evaluation. ECE worked so fast, was very helpful and sent the completed evaluation back to me within 4 days (weekends included). I submitted my application, and MUIC sent my transcripts and certificate of graduation to ECE on Friday. I received my report on Tuesday (I paid 80 USD for the rush services since I have a deadline to meet, as they recommended). The thing you must know about ECE is that your GPA will drop by approximately 0.12 (my CGPA decreased from 3.53 to 3.41, which is a lot), while my CGPA with WES changed from 3.53 to 3.49, which means it is just a 0.04 difference–which is acceptable. It seems like WES has conducted better research on Thai universities. From what I understand, they have to work on conducting the research before they can evaluate your grades.

  • ECE: faster and more reliable services, great service, meeting the deadline on time (actually, it was sent earlier), pretty reasonable prices. However, my CGPA dropped from 3.53 to 3.41 with 122.67 US equivalency credentials. They evaluated everything based on a US university (your credit hours, CGPA and GPA for each course). My university has a thing like a B+ or C+, but ECE changed my grade to B or C instead. This means your CGPA and GPA for each course will definitely be lower than expected.

  • WES: I initially used WES in July 2023 for my first incomplete evaluation to submit my transcript to The George Washington University (GW). The price is quite expensive and the service at that time was on time. However, I was not impressed when I went back to WES for the second evaluation. The only thing I like about WES is that they have done some decent research about my degree, university and good CGPA. While their services and response time are absolutely terrible. WES is not reliable at all. From what I read on the WES Facebook page, you might have to submit the document(s) 3-4 months in advance, if you really need to use WES services.

I have personally experienced inequality in Thailand as a result of my educational heritage; it is a pervasive issue in all types of schools in Thailand, including public, private, religious-affiliated, bilingual, and international schools. Undoubtedly, there is a correlation between an individual's financial resources and their educational opportunities: the calibre of education and the qualifications they obtain are directly proportional to the amount of money they pay. Practicality was absent from the majority of the courses offered at my Thai Catholic school. The students were compelled to enrol in private tutoring institutions as a result of the curriculum's deficiencies, which ultimately benefited those who could afford the tuition. Numerous privileged students pursued private tutoring to prepare for exams that were not included in their curriculum. The rationale for this action was to enhance their academic performance in comparison to those who do not have the opportunity. This case illustrates a concerning trend: students who have access to additional financial resources for tutoring tend to outperform their classmates in terms of knowledge acquisition. This disparity was evident to me when I began applying to institutions in Norway and Germany for my undergraduate degree, to further elaborate on the previous issue of the practicality of the Thai curriculum. This was the result of the Thai High School Certificate, "Mathayom 6," not being recognised. This revelation underscored a more extensive issue: the curriculum prioritises "rote memorization over real-life applications," which is the reason for the limited international recognition of Thai qualifications. This inequality not only obstructs Thailand's potential for progress but also deprives individuals of opportunities, particularly among the impending generations. Thai pupils' English proficiency is inadequate, according to my assessment. English must be a communication instrument, not an elite learning option for certain individuals. The limited proficiency is scarcely passed if they exclusively study the Thai curriculum. The Thai curriculum did not provide me with the necessary support to improve my English proficiency, and I was only able to achieve my current level of proficiency as a result of my eagerness to learn."

Your job is to COMPLETE the application related to your personal data, programme information, rÃĐsumÃĐ/CV, INTS Short Answer Essays, academic history, international credentials evaluation, test scores (IELTS/Duolingo), recommendations (selecting who you want to choose and choose wisely), additional uploads and employment history. I would recommend you to review and check EVERYTHING (as if you have OCD). Especially your INTS short essays and the documents you planned to submit because you are not able to edit or change the files after you have submitted the application. It is a pretty simple, but stressful experience that you have to go through during the admissions or application process. For the letter of recommendation part, I got help from my professor (Jack) at MUIC and ex-manager (CoCo) from where I worked. I asked them to be my recommenders because I am quite close to them, and they are very helpful. Thanks to them and how they have dedicated to helping me. 😃
